Carley’s work engages the interpretation of memories within the landscape and fictitious sites. She constructs visual representations of artificial land, studies of an invented place. Starting as an investigation of her childhood memories traveling through isolated landscapes of the southwestern United States, these works evolved into contemplation of indeterminate space and an uncertain future.

‘Temporal Passage’ – her site-specific installation for Main Window – displays a nebulous shape creating a thruway between night and day experiences of one landscape. This series of paintings depicts a fictitious place constructed using glass debris from a rehabilitated landfill located in southeast Brooklyn’s Glass Bottle Beach on Dead Horse Bay. The beach contains trash 100 years old still washing up on its shores. It attracts glass debris so densely that the whole beach is filled with all ages of glass remnants from full bottles to aged, smooth sea glass. After collecting remnants, Carley created small models, lit, and photographed them to construct a bizarre world. These paintings are a survey of this imagined land which considers the potentials of an anthropogenic landscape through toxically bright and otherworldly forms.
